The Mactaggart Leisure Centre is owned and operated by Islay and Jura Community Enterprises Ltd., a community business. The people of Islay and Jura own the business and elect a Board of Directors to run it.

Today, it is very hard to imagine that its foundation and the building of a state-of-the-art Swimming Pool, Fitness Room, Sauna, and Sunbed stemmed from concerned Islay parents who felt that their children, surrounded by water, had a right to be taught to swim. They also felt that Island life would be a far safer and healthier place if there were an indoor swimming pool.

After ten years of perseverance, campaigning and fundraising, the Mactaggart Pool (as it was known then) opened its doors on 29th June 1991. The rest is history. If you would like to know more history why not take a look at the timeline in the About Us page.
